With Law No. 151/2025, published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale No. 236 of 10 October 2025, the legislator established the national holiday of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy, to be celebrated on 4 October of each year starting from 2026.
Employment law considerations
The employer may require the employee to work on a public holiday, within the limits set by law and by collective bargaining agreements. Work performed on a public holiday entitles the employee, in addition to the ordinary daily gross pay, to remuneration for the hours actually worked, increased by the percentage established by the applicable collective agreement for holiday work.
Tax considerations
With regard to tax and fiscal obligations, the introduction of a new national holiday entails the postponement of deadlines the employer must observe for the proper administrative management of employment relationships. Any deadlines falling on the holiday are deferred – pursuant to art. 6(8) of Decree-Law No. 330/1994 – to the next working day.
